I am usually a bit slow to transition from summer to fall, mostly because we usually have hot summer weather well into October. And I love to clean and decorate my porch for fall when the weather is cooler and not still in the 90’s. I hope this still gives you inspiration on how to decorate a porch for fall even if you have already decorated. Maybe you can add a few more elements to your porch or even save for next year. Around my area we still have almost two months of fall weather and I want to enjoy every moment out here on my front porch!
How to decorate a porch for fall
I love very traditional fall colors. Yellow mums and orange pumpkins! The colors of the leaves on all the trees surrounding our house is the color scheme I always go for on the front porch.
Starting with the steps leading onto the front porch, I placed several pumpkins on the stairs. I planted two small maroon mums in a couple pots I already had on hand. Mums have to be one of my favorite flowers. And then I added a small lantern with a pumpkin on the inside and a fall bow on top. Our steps are pretty small and didn’t leave a whole lot of room for décor but I made room for a few pumpkins and small mums.

Next, I added a fall welcome sign and little fall birdhouse onto the spool table in the corner of the porch. One great inexpensive tip for decorating is using seasonal ribbon to tie bows onto your décor that stays up year around. I tied a fall bow onto the red horseshoe welcome sign on the spool table. This welcome sign is the perfect color and matches the holidays really well and is perfect with a seasonal bow on top.
Fall decorating ideas
Mums and pumpkins are the perfect outdoor decorations. There are so many colors you can choose from. I chose to stick to traditional colors and hung two large yellow mums on the porch.
One day we will have a couple beautiful rocking chairs on our porch but for now the lawn chair rocker works perfect. I placed a couple fall outdoor pillows on the swing and chair. In the tray on the table, I switched the florals out for a beautiful natural fall flower stem from Hobby Lobby and tied a fall ribbon around the vase. This floral stem looks like I picked it straight out of the front yard. Next to it I placed another pumpkin and a fall welcome sign.
I wanted the front door to be very welcoming and cozy. A welcome rug with leaves on it is layered with a yellow and cream striped rug. I hung a leaf garland around the door. For the door hanger, I used the same one I use pretty much year around and just tie different bows around the neck of the deer. I don’t have a lot of room and it is easier to store ribbon then to store several wreaths to change out for the seasons.
This is another great tip for decorating your porch. Use the same door hanger like an initial or something else and just use seasonal ribbon to tie a bow onto it.
Next to the front door sits a black lantern with another fall bow tied on top and a fall sign leaning up next to the ladder.
This ladder is a staple piece for the front porch. I change out the décor for every season. This year I placed an autumn sign on the top and a small scarecrow sits on the next shelf. And in front of the ladder, I placed a large pumpkin jar that is filled with leaves. Finally, next to the ladder sits one of my favorite fall décor pieces. This large wooden scarecrow I found at a yard sale several years back and keep putting him out every year and still love him!
I hope you enjoy our fall porch as much as I do and gives you ideas on how to decorate your porch for fall. It’s hard to believe that this is the last week of October! I want to soak up every minute this fall I possibly can before the busy Christmas season starts.
