Our master bedroom has been put on a back burner ever since we moved into our home. The door was always closed when people came over and no one ever seen it. But I was so ready to refresh our bedroom and create a peaceful space that we enjoyed being in. This master bedroom refresh was done on a budget and took several months to get to where we are. There is still things I would love to do in this room but for now we are enjoying the little refresh.

where we started
When we first moved into our new home it was exactly a year after getting married. I had put together things in this room that we had received as gifts or that was given to us. We hadn’t hung any pictures or did much of anything except add the pine trim. But I was thankful for our master bedroom and it stayed that way for a few years till I was ready for some change and something a little brighter.
master bedroom refresh on a budget
See what I mean? Pretty, but kind of….blah. The first thing I started shopping for was new bedding. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money and I wanted a basic gray or white quilt. After purchasing the new quilt and new white sheets, I decided to try and get rid of as much of the red wood pieces that I could.
This dresser was a thrift store find for $15. I had this dresser since before we were married. When I bought it, some of the drawers were loose and it didn’t have any handles. I brought it home and fixed it and it stayed that way till now. This dresser was beautiful and an amazing find but I wanted a change for our bedroom.
I sanded the dresser down and there was still a lot of red showing. I even tried stripper and bleach. Nothing was giving me the exact color that I was wanting. I decided to leave the base of the dresser and paint the drawers a gray that I had mixed up from a few paints that I had on hand to try and match the bedspread the best I could.
The black drawer pulls I purchased from amazon. Overall I don’t mind the way that it turned out. I do wish the wood was a little lighter and eventually I would love to put black metal legs on the bottom
Wedding Dress cabinet and shelf
The next makeover I decided to tackle was the wedding dress curio cabinet that I had purchased for $15 from Fred’s when they were going out of business. I took the shelves out and attached a hook to the top to hang my dress on. Again this cabinet was a red wood that I was trying to get rid of. I took the glass out and painted it a matte black.
This beautiful solid wood shelf my dad had made. I tried stripping this wood and even bleaching it just like the dresser. I looked up several different blog post and tried everything but I still wasn’t getting that natural wood look. After several tries and a couple weeks I decided to paint it the same matte black to match the wedding dress cabinet.
New nightstands, curtains, & decor
I had been on the look out for several months for matching nightstands at thrift stores, flea markets, and yard sales. I had no luck finding any and when I did find a couple the price was way to high for used nightstands that I would have to redo. A couple weeks ago a local furniture store put up signs that they were going out of business. I went in there hoping to find a good deal on a couple nightstands. Everything was marked at least half price and I ended up finding two beautiful cedar wood nightstands. I was so excited and it matches the trim perfectly.
After all the makeovers were finally done It was now time to add some décor. The frame above the dresser and the shadow box above the nightstand were both gifts that I had received as wedding presents. The large G was our guest book from our wedding. The other two signs are from Hobby Lobby. The new gray curtains and rods came from walmart.com along with the industrial light fixture.
I am so happy with our master bedroom refresh on a budget. We did a lot of makeovers and used what we could that we already had. You don’t have to have a lot of money to make a large impact. Sometimes just shopping your home and changing things up can make a huge difference.
